frequently asked questions

What should I expect from my physiotherapy appointment?

If you choose to see one of our physiotherapists you will require an initial 45 minute consultation. The consultation will involve a discussion of your symptoms and personal goals followed by a physical assessment. During the examination, your physiotherapist will be assessing your posture, joint range of movement, muscle tone, length and strength and, depending on your symptoms, may check your reflexes and sensation. On completion of your assessment your physiotherapist will give you a clear diagnosis, prognosis and discuss an appropriate treatment plan.

In our experience, the majority of neuromusculoskeletal problems are due to biomechanical deficiencies. At Newcastle Physiotherapy we use a combination of hands on, manual therapy techniques in conjunction with progressive exercise therapy. Our treatment philosophy is aimed at improving your biomechanics and restoring the optimal length/tension relationships of muscles and joints. Our core treatment modalities include joint mobilisation and manipulation, specific soft tissue and neural mobilisation and progressive exercise therapy. In addition, our physiotherapists are trained in acupuncture which can be used as an adjunct to treatment or as a course of treatment on its own, usually for pain relief.

What qualifications do your physiotherapists have?
All of our Physiotherapists are educated to at least degree level and are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Health and Care Professions Council. All of our physiotherapists regularly partake in continuous professional development by the way of attending regular post graduate study courses.
What should I wear?
It is necessary for physiotherapists to see your body in order to examine and diagnose you accurately. Therefore we recommend that if you are not comfortable undressing to your underwear, you bring along shorts and a vest top. We always keep spare shorts at our clinics so don’t panic if you forge your own!

Can I use my private medical insurance?

Newcastle Physiotherapy is registered with all major medical insurance providers.

Using Private Medical Insurance

Before you attend our clinic you must contact your insurance provider to notify them of your condition.  They will inform you whether your condition is covered by your policy.  Once this has been clarified they will provide you with an authorisation code for treatment.

When you book your first appointment at our clinic it is important to provide us with the following information:

  • The insurance provider you are using.
  • Your membership number.
  • Your authorisation code for the treatment and the number of sessions you have been authorised.
  • Your policy excess amount. It is important that you inform us of your excess as we will bill your insurance company directly. They will only pay for your treatment after the excess amount has been covered. The excess must then be paid directly to our clinic.

Many insurance companies will not backdate treatment so it is important that we receive the above information before you proceed with your first appointment, otherwise you will be liable to cover the cost of treatment.

How many treatment sessions should I need?

We treat a multitude of different conditions every day at our clinics. The number of required treatment sessions depends on a number of variables such as your primary diagnosis, the mechanism and severity of your injury, your age, lifestyle, past medical and injury history, to name but a few.

However, we can guarantee that your physiotherapist will discuss all of the above with you and recommend a very clear treatment plan, based on their findings. You will never be under any pressure to attend appointments as we encourage a collaborative approach between physiotherapist and client to treatment planning and appointment scheduling.

Where can I park?
We offer free, on-site parking facilities at both our Great Park and Regent Centre Clinics.
